Carboxylic acids And Acid Derivatives
Give one good chemical test to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds:
(i) 1 Propanol and 2 Propanol.
(ii) Oxalic acid and benzoic acid.
i) Iodoform Test: It helps to distinguish these, 2-Propanol contains the grouping - CH COCH3. So when it is warmed with I2/NaOH, iodoform, (yellow ppt) is formed. 1-Propanol does not contain this grouping. So it does not give this test.
(ii) Oxalic acid decolourises a warm solution of acidified KMn04 solution.
