Metals and Non-metals
Some metals are used for making cooking vessels because these
(i) are good conductors of heat.
(ii) have high melting points.
(iii) are non-corrosive.
(iii) are easily available.
Illustration:
Take an aluminium or copper wire. Clamp this wire on a stand as shown. Attach a pin at the free end with a wax. Heat the wire with a burner near the place where it is clamped. What do you observe. It will be found that the attached pin gets removed within no time. It shows that the metal conducts heat and soon the heat reaches the free end where a pin is attached. Wax melts and the pin is detached. Further when wire is heated further, it does not melt. It shows that the metal has high melting point. Thus, metals like aluminium and copper are good conductors of heat and have high melting point and thus can be used for making cooking vessels.
