A train travels from one station to another at a speed of 40 km/hr and returns to first station at the speed of 60 km/hr. Calculate the average speed and average velocity of the train.

Solution

Let the distance between two stations be 'd' km.

After the journey train returns to the first station.

Total distance travelled = 2d
Net displacement of the train = 0

Time taken by train to travel from one station to another, $t_{1} = \frac{d}{40} hrs$

Time taken by train to come back, $t_{2} = \frac{d}{60} hrs$

Total time taken by train to complete the round trip is given by,

$t = t_{1} + t_{2} = \frac{d}{40} + \frac{d}{60} = \frac{d}{24} hrs$

$∴ Average speed = \frac{2 d}{d / 24} = 48 km / hr$

Average velocity = $\frac{0}{d / 24} = 0 km / hrs$
