Nationalism In India

Question
CBSEENSS10018105

How did the industrialists relate to the Civil Disobedience Movement? Analyse their role.

Solution
Indian merchants and industrialists, keen on expanding their business reacted against the colonial policies that restricted business activities. They wanted protection against import of foreign goods, and a rupee-sterling foreign exchange ratio that would discourage imports. The Federation of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) was formed in 1927 to organise their business interests. Industrialists like G.D. Birla and Thakurdas actively supported the movement with financial aid and even refused to sell the imported goods. But after the failure of Round Table Conference, business groups were no longer Uniformly enthusiastic.
