An object placed 15 cm in front of a lens forms a real image three times magnified. Where is the image formed? What is the focal length of the lens?

Solution
Given,
Object distance, u = - 15 cm
Image distance, v =?
Focal length, f =?

As magnification is - ve for a real image, so
                    m = vu = -3 (given)

Therefore, image distance , v = -3u = -3 ×(-15) = +45 cm.

Also, using the lens formula, we have,

                1f = 1v-1u       = 1+45-1-15       = +1+345     = +445

i.e., focal length, f= +454 = +11.25 cm.
