Aunt Jennifer's Tigers

Question
CBSEENEN12019946

Write the sum and substance of the poem ‘Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers’.

Solution

This poem addresses the experience of marriage in the midst of constriction. Aunt Jennifer created tigers on her woollen panel. They are bright denizens of the green forest. They are fearless and they possess chivalric certainty. They prance across the screen with strength and smoothness.

While working on her panel, the fingers of Aunt Jennifer’s hand flutter. She finds it quite hard to pull the ivory needle even. It is because the heavy weight of her husband’s marriage band sits heavily on her hand. She feels tied down by that weight. The poetesss says that even after death, the terrified hands of Aunt Jennifer will tell the whole story of her constrained experiences of married life. She was crushed by the hardships of married life and the same can be seen in her hands. On the other hand the tigers will go on prancing, proud and unafraid.
