Question
ICSEENIPH10005598

i) It is observed that the temperature of the surroundings starts falling when the ice in a frozen lake starts melting. Give a reason for the observation.

ii) How is the heat capacity of the body related to its specific heat capacity?

Solution

i) When ice converts into water a high amount of heat energy is required. Therefore, when frozen lake starts melting it absorbs a large amount of heat from the surroundings. As a result, the temperature of the surrounding falls and it becomes very cold.

ii) Heat capacity = mass (m) x specific heat capacity (L)
