(i) Give the Clifford representation of constitution of bleaching powder.

(ii) Write the chemical reactions when bleaching powder reacts with dilute HCl.

(iii) What is responsible for its oxidizing as well as bleaching properties.

Solution
(i) According to Clifford, the bleaching powder is supposed to be a mixture of calcium hypochloride Ca(ClO)2and basic calcium chloride CaCl2 . Ca(OH)2 . H2O.
2Cl2 +3Ca(OH)2 ---> Ca(OCl2) +CaCl2.Ca(OH)2.H2O +H2O
ii)In the insufficient amount of dilute HCl, nascent oxygen is liberated which is responsible for its bleaching action.
CaOCl2 +HCl --> CaCl2 +HCl
HClO --> HCl + O
iii) The nascent oxygen produced in the presence of an insufficient supply of dilute acids is responsible for its oxidizing as well as bleaching properties.
