Name the chief ore of lead. Write the steps involved in the extraction of lead from its sulphide ore by the self-reduction process. Give balanced equations wherever necessary.

Solution

 Galena PbS

Extraction of Pb. from Galena (PbS)

Self reduction process : It involves the following step :

(i) Concentration : Ore is crushed, findely powdered and then concentrated by froth floatation process.

(ii) Roasting : Concentrated ore is roasted in the presence of air.
2PbS(s) +3O2 --> 2PbO(s) +2SO2(g)
PbS(s) 2O2(g) --> PbSO4(g)

(iii) Reduction : Supply of air is cut-off at this stage. More galena is added, temperature is raised to melt the charge when galena reduces both oxide and sulphate to metallic lead.
2PbO(s) +PbS(s) ---> 3Pb(l) +SO2(g)
PbSO4(s) +PbS(s) ---> 2Pb(l) +2SO2(s)

Molten lead is obtained.
