Question

Let X represent the difference between the number of heads and the number of tails obtained when a coin is tossed 6 times. What are possible values of X?

Answer

Let a denote the number of heads and b, the number of tails when a coin is tossed 6 times, then
X = difference between a and b = |a - b|.
Here, both a and b can take values 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 but a + b is always equal to 6.
∴ we have the table:
Table

a

b

∴ X takes values 0, 2, 4 and 6.
