It is playing a critical role in achieving sustainable development and food security in the twenty-first century e.g. ability of the government to predict areas of food insecurity and vulnerability using appropriate information and software tools so that actions can be taken to prevent or reduce the likelihood of an emergency. It has a positive impact on the agricultural sector as it disseminates infomation regarding emerging technologies, and its application, prices, weather and soil conditions for growing different crops etc. It has also brought 'knowledge economy' which can act as a catalyst of change. It also has potential of employment generation in rural areas.
