The current gain for common emitter amplifier is 59. If the emitter current is 6.0 mA,find (i) base current and (ii) collector current.

Solution

Given, a common emitter configuration.
Current gain, $β$ = 59
Emitter current, I_E = 6 mA

Now, using the relation,

$α = \frac{β}{1 + β}$

we have, $α = \frac{59}{60}$

But, $α = \frac{I_{C}}{I_{E}}$

$\Rightarrow$ $Collector current, I_{C} = α . I_{E}$

$\Rightarrow$ $I_{C} = \frac{59}{60} \times 6 mA = 5.9 mA$

and,

Base current, $I_{B} = I_{E} - I_{C} = 6.0 - 5.9 = 0.1 mA .$
