The light of wavelength 600 nm is incident normally on a slit of width 3 mm. Calculate the linear width of central maximum on a screen kept 3 m away from the slit.

Solution

Given,
Wavelength of light, λ = 600 nm = 600 × 10-9 m
Slit width, d = 3 mm = 3× 10-3 m
Distance of the screen from the slit, D = 3 m

Now,
Linear width of central maximum = 2d
                                                   = 2×3×600×10-93×10-3
                                                   = 1.2 mm
