The wavelength of light from the spectral emission line of sodium is 589 nm. Find the kinetic energy at which
(a)    an electron, and
(b)    a neutron, would have the same de-Broglie wavelength.

Solution

Given,
Wavelength of sodium light, λ = 589 nm

We know that,   λ = h2mE

                     E = h22λ2m

(a) For electron,

Energy, E = (6.63 × 10-34)22 × (589 × 10-9)2 × 9 × 10-31

               = 7.03 × 10-25J

(b) For neutron,

Energy, E = (6.63 × 10-34)22 × (589 × 10-9)2 × 1.66 × 10-27

               = 3.81 × 10-28J.
