The refractive indices of glass and water with respect to air are 3/2 and 4/3 respectively. What will be the refractive index of glass with respect to water?

Solution

Refractive index of water, $μ_{air} = 1$
Given,
Refractive index of glass w.r.t. air, ${}^{a}μ_{g} = \frac{3}{2}$

Refractive inex of water w.r.t air, ${}^{a}μ_{w} = \frac{4}{3}$

$∴$ refractive index of glass w.r.t. water, = ${}^{w}μ_{g} = \frac{{}^{a}μ_{g}}{{}^{a}μ_{w}} = \frac{\frac{3}{2}}{\frac{4}{3}}$ = $\frac{9}{8}$
