What is the ratio of slit widths when amplitudes of light waves from them have a ratio $\sqrt{2} : 1$ .

Solution

Given, ratio of amplitude of light waves =

\sqrt{2} : 1

Therefore,

\frac{ω_{1}}{ω_{2}} = \frac{I_{1}}{I_{2}} = \frac{a^{2}}{b^{2}}

\Rightarrow

\frac{ω_{1}}{ω_{2}} = {(\frac{\sqrt{2}}{1})}^{2} = \frac{2}{1}

i.e.,

ω_{1} : ω_{2} = 2 : 1 .

So, the slit widths are in the ratio of 2:1.
