The phase difference between two waves reaching a point is $π / 2$ . What is the resultant amplitude, if the individual amplitudes are 3 mm and 4 mm?

Solution

Amplitude of first wave, a = 3 mm
Amplitude of second wave, b = 4 mm

The formula for resultant amplitude is given by,

R = \sqrt{a^{2} + b^{2} + 2 ab \cos π / 2}

Therefore,

R = \sqrt{3^{2} + 4^{2} + 2 \times 3 \times 4 \times 0} (\cos π / 2 = 0) = \sqrt{2 5} = 5 m m
