Question
CBSEENPH12038370

The phase difference between two waves reaching a point is π/2. What is the resultant amplitude,  if the individual amplitudes are 3 mm and 4 mm?

Solution
Amplitude of first wave, a = 3 mm
Amplitude of second wave, b = 4 mm

The formula for resultant amplitude is given by,
R = a2+b2+2ab cos π/2

Therefore,

R = 32+42+2×3×4×0           (cos π/2 = 0)   = 2 5   = 5 mm
