Angular magnification of eyepiece =

.

Thus, angular magnification increases if f_e is smaller.

Magnification of the objective =

\frac{v_{0}}{|u_{0}|} = \frac{1}{\frac{|u_{0}|}{f} - 1}

Magnification is large when

|u_{0}|

is slightly greater than f₀(focal length of the objective).
As the object lies close to the focus of objective lens, u = f_o.And, to increse this magnification (v/f_o ), f_o should be small.
