A 60 μF capacitor is connected to a 110 V, 60 Hz ac supply. Determine the rms value of the current in the circuit.

Solution

Given,    $Capacitance of the capacitor, C = 60 μF = 60 \times 10^{- 6} F$

$Peak value of voltage, E_{rms} = 110 V Frequency of the AC supply, f = 60 Hz$

Rms value of current,

   $I_{rms} = \frac{E_{rms}}{X_{C}} = \frac{E_{rms}}{\frac{1}{C . ω}} = E_{rms .} C . 2 πf$
Now,
On putting the values, we get

$I_{rms} = 110 \times 60 \times 10^{- 6} \times 2 \times 3.14 \times 60$
$= 2.49 A .$
