Two bar magnets placed together in a vibration magnetometer take 3 second for 1 vibration. If one magnet is reversed, the combination takes 4 second for 1 vibration. Find the ratio of their magnetic moments.

Solution

Time taken for first vibration = 3 seconds
Time taken for second vibration = 4 seconds
Ratio of magnetic moment is given by,

\frac{M_{1}}{M_{2}} = \frac{T_{2}^{2} + T_{1}^{2}}{T_{2}^{2} - T_{1}^{2}} = \frac{4^{2} + 3^{2}}{4^{2} - 3^{2}}

= \frac{16 + 9}{16 - 9} = \frac{25}{7}

\frac{M_{1}}{M_{2}} = 3.57
