Solution

When switch S is closed,
8 $Ω$ and 12 $Ω$ on the left side of switch S are in parallel. Also, $12 and 8$ on the right os s are in parallel combination.

Therefore,
Equivalent resistance of each combination = $\frac{8 \times 12}{8 + 12} = 4.8 Ω$

These two resistance will be in series with each other.

$∴ Equivalent resistance, R = 4.8 + 4.8 = 9.6 Ω$
