(i) Calculate the electric potential at a point X due to a charge of 0.5 μC located at 10 cm from it.
(ii) Also calculate the work done in bringing a charge of 3 x 10
–9 C from infinity to the point X.

Solution

Given, 
Charge, q= 0.5 μC 
Distance between point X and point charge, r=10 cm

i) Electric potential at X, V is given by
                  14πεo. qr=9×109×0.5×10-610×10-2=4.5×104  V  

ii) Amount of work done in bringing a charge of 3× 10-9 C  from infinioty to X.
Work done = charge × potential at point X
                = 3× 10-9 × 4.5 × 10
                = 13.5 × 10-5 J
