Estimate the ratio of the electric force of repulsion between two proton to the gravitational force of attraction between them.

Solution

$Electrostatic force is given by F = k \frac{q_{1} q_{2}}{r^{2}} = 9 \times 10^{9} \frac{(1.6 \times 10^{- 19})^{2}}{r^{2}} Gravitational force is given by F = G \frac{m_{1} m_{2}}{r^{2}} = 6.67 \times 10^{- 11} \frac{(1.67 \times 10^{- 27})^{2}}{r^{2}}$

Ratio of these forces are given by,

$\frac{9 \times 10^{9} \frac{(1.6 \times 10^{- 19})^{2}}{r^{2}}}{6.67 \times 10^{- 11} \frac{(1.67 \times 10^{- 27})^{2}}{r^{2}}}$

= $1.24 \times 10^{36}$ .
