What is washing soda? Give its one characteristic property and one important use.

Solution

Chemically, washing soda is a carbonate of sodium with chemical formula Na₂CO₃ · 10H₂O. It is alkaline in nature.

Na₂CO₃ +10H₂O → Na₂CO₃.10H₂O (washing soda)

It is very useful as a cleansing (detergent) agent.
It is used for removing permanent hardness of water.
