What happens when the extinguisher cylinder is inverted and the stopper is opened by pushing the plunger?

Solution

The stopper contains dilute sulphuric acid and when it is broken, the acid falls into the cylinder which contains sodium hydrogen carbonate. The reaction between acid and sodium hydrogen carbonate produces CO₂. This CO₂ is sent through side tube nozzle and directed towards the fire to extinguish it.
