How is the magnitude of earthquake expressed?

Solution
The power of an earthquake is expressed in terms of a magnitude on a scale called Richter scale. The earthquakes measuring upto 3 on the richter scale are said to be mild and do not cause any damage. Such mild earthquakes are sometimes not even noticed. On the other hand the earthquakes measuring 8 or more on richter scale are very severe and can destroy entire cities or villages. Large scale destruction is caused by such earthquakes.
