Chemical Effects Of Electric Current

Question
CBSEENSC8005820

A child staying in the coastal region tests the drinking water and also the seawater with his tester. He finds that the compass needle deflects more in the case of seawater. Can you explain the reason?

Solution

Drinking water contains less ions in it as compared to the sea water.

Drinking water is processed and purified before supplying it to the houses. Thid way due to the removal of salts and minerals, the conductivity has been reduced.
Sea water being rich in salts, acidic and basic substances is a better conductor of electricity. Therefore, the compass needle deflects more in seawater.
