Solution

$Let A = [\begin{matrix} 5 - x & x + 1 \\ 2 & 4 \end{matrix}] It is given that the martix A is singular, therefore |A| = 0 \Rightarrow |\begin{matrix} 5 - x & x + 1 \\ 2 & 4 \end{matrix}| = 0 \Rightarrow 4 (5 - x) - 2 (x + 1) = 0 \Rightarrow 20 - 4 x - 2 x - 2 = 0 \Rightarrow - 6 x + 18 = 0 \Rightarrow x = \frac{- 18}{- 6} = 3$

Thus, when x = 3, the given matrix A is singular.
