Question
Three coins are tossed. Describe two events which are mutually exclusive but not exhaustive.
Solution
Three coins are tossed. The sample space is: S = {HHH, HHT, HTH, THH, HTT, THT, TTH, TTT}
Event E = three head show E = {HHH}
Event F = three tails show. F = {TTT}
∴ E and F are mutually exclusive.
But,
∴ E and F are not exhaustive.
Hence, events E and F are mutually exclusive, but not exhaustive.
