If a tower 30 m high, casts a shadow 10 3m long on the ground, then what is the angle of elevation of the sun?

Solution

Let AB be the tower and BC be its shadow.

$AB = 30 m, BC = 10 \sqrt{3} m In ∆ ABC, tanθ = \frac{AB}{BC} \Rightarrow tanθ = \frac{30}{10 \sqrt{3}} \Rightarrow tanθ = \frac{3}{\sqrt{3}} \tan θ = \sqrt{3} But, \tan 60 ° = \sqrt{3} ∴ θ = 60 ° Thus, the angle of elevation of sun is 60 ° .$
