A river 4 m deep and 60 m wide is flowing at the rate of 0.31 km/hour. How much water will fall into the sea in a minute?

Solution

0.31 km/hour
= 0.31 x 1000 m/hour = 310 m/hour
equals 310 over 60 straight m divided by minute
equals 31 over 6 straight m divided by minute
∴ Volume of water that falls into the sea in a minute
equals 4 cross times 60 cross times 31 over 6
equals space 1240 space straight m cubed
