The ages of Rahul and Haroon are in the ratio 5 : 7. Four years later the sum of their ages will be 56 years. What are their present ages?

Solution

Since, ages of Rahul and Harron are in the ratio of 5:7.
Let their present ages are: 5x and 7x.

∴ 4 years later:     Age of Rahul = (5x + 4) years
                      Age of Haroon = (7x + 4 ) years
According to the condition, we have
     (5x + 4) + (7x + 4) = 56
or        5x + 4 + 7x + 4 = 56
or              12x + 8 = 56
   Transposing 8 to RHS, we have
                                  12x = 56 - 8 = 48

Dividing both sides by 12, we have
                                     $straight x equals 48 over 12 equals 4$

∴ Present age of Rahul = 5x = 5 $cross times$ 4 = 20 years
Present age of Haroon = 7x = 7 $cross times$ 4 = 28 years
