The cotton textile mills were located in the western parts of India namely Maharashtra and Gujarat, while the jute mills were mainly concentrated in Bengal. The iron and steel industry began coming up in the beginning of 20th century. There were few other industries like sugar, cement, paper etc. at the time of independence.
