Gametogenesis involves the formation of Gametes which are haploid. If a haploid cell gives rise to gametes the cell division that takes place is mitosis. If a Diploid cell gives rise to gametes then the kind of cell division that takes place is meiosis or Reduction division which reduces the chromosome number to half i.e. to haploid.  - Wired Faculty
