Aniline undergoes bromination in ortho and para position but in presence of strong acid it gives m-bromo aniline. Explain.

Solution

-NH₂ group is o- and p-directing and thus bromination of aniline gives o- and p-bromo aniline. However, in presence of strong acid, aniline combines with H⁺ to give C₆H₅NH₃⁺ and -NH₃⁺ m-directing and thus m-bromo products are formed.
