How can we distinguish between, n-butanol and t-butanol using acidified potassium dichromate?

Solution

Acidified K₂Cr₂O₇ is orange in colour. When it oxidises alcohol, its colour changes to bluish green.
n-butanol is 1° alcohol and gives a bluish-green colour while butanol is 3° alcohol, does not react with K₂Cr₂O₇.
