Question
ICSEENIPH10006066

A wire of length 80 cm has a frequency of 256 Hz. Calculate the length of a similar wire under similar tension, which will have frequency 1024 Hz.

Solution

As the frequency (F) of wire is inversely proportional to its length (l)
So, for the same tension, we have, F1l1 = F2l2
Given, F1 = 256 Hz, F2 = 1024 Hz and
WiredFaculty

Hence, the length of wire, which has frequency 1024 Hz is 20 cm.

Question
ICSEENIPH10006067

A certain sound has a frequency of 256 hertz and a wavelength of 1.3 m.
1. Calculate the speed with which this sound travels
2. What difference would be felt by a listener between the above sound and another sound travelling at the same speed, but of wavelength 2.6 m?

Solution

1. Given, f = 256 Hz and λ = 1.3 m
We know that
Speed v = f x λ = 256 x 1.3
⇒ v = 332.8 m s-1
Thus, the sound travels with a speed of 332.8 m s-1.
2. For the second case, λ = 2.6 m and v = 332.8 m s-1
straight f space equals straight v over straight lambda space equals space fraction numerator 332.8 over denominator 2.6 end fraction
