The Difference:

i. Rivers of the north are long and slow flowing rivers whereas rivers of the South are short and swift flowing rivers.

ii. Rivers of north are rain fed as well as snow fed whereas rivers of the south are only rain fed.

iii. Rivers of north are prone to floods whereas rivers of south are not.

Give reasons for the following:

i. It is cooler on the mountain slopes than in the plains during summer.

ii. Mumbai is warmer than Kanpur in December.

iii. Rajasthan receives very little rainfall.

Solution

i. The mountain slopes are cooler than in the plains during summer because of normal lapse of temperature i.e. temperature decreases with height at the rate of 1°C for every 165m of ascend.

ii. This is because Mumbai is influenced by the sea and have moderate climate.

iii. Aravallis lie parallel to the Arabian sea branch of S.W. Monsoons. Thus are unable to check the winds.
