Why are resources distributed unequally over the earth?
The distribution of natural resources depends upon number of physical factors like terrain, climate and altitude.
The distribution of resources is unequal because these factors differ so much over the earth.
What is resource conservation?
Using resources carefully and giving them time to get renewed is called resource conservation.
Why are human resources important?
People are human resources. People can make the best use of nature to create more resources when they have the knowledge, skill and the technology to do so. That is why human human resources are important
What is sustainable development?
We should use resources in such a balanced way that we satisfy our needs as well as conserve them for future. This concept is called sustainable development.

Potential and actual resources
Potential resources |
Actual resources |
1.Potential resources are those whose entire quantity may not be known and these are not being used at present. 2. These resources could be used in the future. 3. Examples: uranium deposits in Ladakh.

Ubiquitous and localised resources
Ubiquitous resources |
Localised resources |
1. A ubiquitous resource is one which is found all over the world. 2. Its presence is not governed by physical conditions. 3. Examples: air. |
1. A localised resource is one which is found in a particular region or physical condition. 2. The presence of a localised resource is governed by physical conditions. 3. Examples: minerals. |

What is meant by utility?
Utility or usability is what makes an object or substance a resource. If a substance can be used in any way, it is said to have a utility.
What are natural resources?
Resources that are drawn from Nature and used without much modification are called natural resources.
What is called to resources that have limited stock?
The resources having limited stock are called non-renewable resources.
Classify resources on the basis of their distribution.
On the basis of their distribution, resources are classified into ubiquitous and localised.
Mention the difference between natural resources and human-made resources with examples.
Natural Resources Resources that are drawn from Nature and used without much modification are called natural resources. The air we breathe, the water in our rivers and lakes, the soils, minerals are all natural resources.
Sometimes, natural substances become resources only when their original form has been changed. People use natural resources to make buildings, bridges, roads, machinery and vehicles, which are known as human made resources.

Suggest measures to ensure sustainable development.
The measures are:
(i)All uses of renewable resources should be sustainable.
(ii)The diversity of life on the earth is conserved.
(iii)The damage to natural environmental system is minimised.

Describe the classification of natural resources
Natural resources are classified into different groups depending upon their level of development and use; origin; stock and distribution.
(i)On the basis of their development and use resources can be classified into two groups, actual resources and potential resources.
Actual resources are those resources whose quantity is known. Potential resources are those whose entire quantity may not be known and these are not being used at present.
(ii)Based on their origin, resources can be abiotic or biotic. Abiotic resources are non-living while biotic resources are living. Soils, rocks and minerals are abiotic but plants and animals are biotic resources.
(iii)Natural resources can be broadly categorised into renewable and non-renewable resources. Renewable resources are those which get renewed or replenished quickly. Non-renewable resources are those which have a limited stock.
(iv)On the basis of their distribution resources can be ubiquitous or localised. Resources that are found everywhere like the air we breathe, are ubiquitous. But those which are found only in certain places are localised, like copper and iron ore.
