    Question 5
    CBSEENGE12023643

    Define human geography.

    Solution
Human geography studies the inter relationship between the physical environment and socio-cultural environment created by human beings through mutual interaction with each other.

According to Ellen C. Semple, Human Geography is a study of changing relationship between unresting man and unstable earth. Wheras for Ratzel, “Human geography is the synthetic study of relationship between human societies and earth’s surface”.
    Question 6
    CBSEENGE12023645

Name some sub-fields of human geography.

    Solution

The sub-fields of human geography are:

    (i) Behavioural geography

    (ii) Geography of social well-being

    (iii) Cultural geography

    (iv) Historical geography

    Question 7
    CBSEENGE12023646

How is human geography related to other social sciences?

    Solution

Human geography attempts to explain the relationship between all elements of human life and the space they occur over. In this way human geography assumes a highly interdisciplinary nature.
It develops close interface with other sister disciplines in social sciences in order to understand and explain human elements on the surface of the earth.

    Question 8
    CBSEENGE12023647

    Explain naturalisation of humans.

    Solution
Human beings interact with their physical environment with the help of technology. Technology indicates the level of cultural development of society.
(i)In the early stages of their interaction with their natural environment humans were greatly influenced by the nature. They adapted to the dictates of nature. This is so because the level of technology was very low and the stage of human social development was also primitive.
(ii)This type of interaction between primitive human society and strong forces of nature was termed as environmental determinism. At that stage of very low technological development, we can imagine the presence of a naturalised human, who listened to nature was afraid of its fury and worshipped it.

(iii)In this situation in early stage of man’s evolution technology development was at a low level. Man obeyed the nature and was afraid of her fury and worshipped the nature. This situation can be seen in several tribal areas in India.
(iv)The tribes of central India Abujh Maad wears a small loin cloth and has a small axe. They practice primitive agriculture by clearing a piece of land in forest. He drinks water from a stream. He gathers roots and leaves to eat. This example shows the relationship of a man and nature.
(v)There is direct dependence of human beings on nature for resources which sustain them. The physical environment for such societies becomes the “Mother Nature”.
    Question 9
    CBSEENGE12023648

Write a note on the scope of human geography.

    Solution

Human geography studies the inter-relationship between the physical environment and sociocultural environment created by human beings through mutual interaction with each other.
(i)The process of adaptation, adjustment with and modification of the environment started with the appearance of human beings over the surface of the earth in different ecological niches. Thus, if we imagine the beginning of human geography with the interaction of environment and human beings, it has its roots deep in history.
(ii)Thus, the concerns of human geography have a long temporal continuum though the approaches to articulate them have changed over time. This dynamism in approaches and thrusts shows the vibrant nature of the discipline.

(iii)American geographers, Finch and Triwartha divided the subject matter of human geography into two broad sections : (i) Physical or Natural Environment, and (ii) Cultural or Man-made Environment. Physical Environment consists of phenomena such as human settlements as well as features associated with agriculture and transportation.

(i)Technology indicates the level of cultural development of society. Human beings were able to develop technology after they developed better understanding of natural laws.
(ii)For example, the understanding of concepts of friction and heat helped us discover fire. Similarly, understanding of the secrets of DNA and genetics enabled us to conquer many diseases. We use the laws of aerodynamics to develop faster planes.
(iii)In the early stages of their interaction with their natural environment humans were greatly influenced by it. They adapted to the dictates of Nature. This is so because the level of technology was very low and the stage of human social development was also primitive.

    Question 21
    CBSEENGE12023691

Describe the dichotomy between physical phenomena and human beings.

    Solution

The dichotomy between physical phenomena and human beings is not a valid one because nature and human beings are inseparable elements and should be seen holistically.
It is interesting to note that both physical and human phenomena are used as metaphore in using symbols from the human anatomy, for example the face of the earth, eye of the storm, mouth of the river etc. and even German geographer described state and country as living organisms and the out work of road, railway etc.
Hence, cannot separate the nature and human beings which are so intricately interviewed.

‘‘The imprints of human activities are created everywhere.’’ Justify this statement by giving any three examples.

    Solution

    Examples of human imprints are:
    (i) Health resorts on highlands,
(ii) Fields, orchards and pastures in plains and rolling hills.
    (iii) Ports on the coasts.

    Question 32
    CBSEENGE12025163

“Nature provides opportunities and humans make use of these and slowly nature gets humanized and starts bearing imprints of human endeavour”. Analyse the statement with examples.

    Solution

    Examples of human imprints are:

    (i) Health resorts on highlands.

(ii) Fields, orchards and pastures in plains and rolling hills.

“Nature and humans are inseparable elements”. Justify the statement with suitable examples.

    Solution

The earth is the home of mankind. It may be in different forms. All types of life supports are provided by nature. They directly depend on nature. Nature and humans are inseparable and should be seen as a single element.
    For eg:
-The concepts of friction and heat helped us discover fire.
-Understanding the secrets of DNA and genetics enabled us to conquer many diseases.
-The laws of aerodynamics helps us to develop faster planes.

    Question 34
    CBSEENGE12025208

‘‘Nature provides opportunities and humans make use of these and slowly nature gets humanised and starts bearing the imprints of human endeavour.’’ Justify the statement.

    Solution

The imprints of human activities are created everywhere; health resorts on highlands, huge urban sprawls, fields, orchards and pastures in plains and rolling hills, ports on the coasts, oceanic routes on he oceanic surface and satellites in the space. The earlier scholars termed this as possibilism.Nature provides opportunities and human being make use of these and slowly nature gets humanised and starts bearing the imprints of human endeavour.
