Define human geography.
Name some sub-fields of human geography.
The sub-fields of human geography are:
(i) Behavioural geography
(ii) Geography of social well-being
(iii) Cultural geography
(iv) Historical geography
How is human geography related to other social sciences?
Human geography attempts to explain the relationship between all elements of human life and the space they occur over. In this way human geography assumes a highly interdisciplinary nature.
It develops close interface with other sister disciplines in social sciences in order to understand and explain human elements on the surface of the earth.
Explain naturalisation of humans.
Write a note on the scope of human geography.
Human geography studies the inter-relationship between the physical environment and sociocultural environment created by human beings through mutual interaction with each other.
(i)The process of adaptation, adjustment with and modification of the environment started with the appearance of human beings over the surface of the earth in different ecological niches. Thus, if we imagine the beginning of human geography with the interaction of environment and human beings, it has its roots deep in history.
(ii)Thus, the concerns of human geography have a long temporal continuum though the approaches to articulate them have changed over time. This dynamism in approaches and thrusts shows the vibrant nature of the discipline.
Mention any three core concerns of geography as a discipline.
The core concerns of geography are mentioned below:
Differentiate between Welfare school of thought and Behaviourial school of thought.
The difference:
What was Ellen C Semple defination of human geography?
According to Ellen C. Semple, “Human geography is the study of “the changing relationship between the unresting man and the unstable earth.”
What is environmental-determinism?
The interaction between primitive human society and strong forces of nature was termed as environmental determinism.

Explain how human beings interact with their physical environment with the help of technology.
Differentiate between Determinism and Possibilism.
Determinism | Possibilism |
(i)It refers to the point of view supporting environment control on human action. | (i)It refers to the physical environ-ment for humans to exploit it for their benefits. |
(ii)The determinism generally emphasis on human as a passive agent influenced by the environmental factors determine their attitude, decision-making and life style. | (ii)The emphasis is firmly placed on human rather than nature. |
(iii)The scholars who supported deter-minism were Greek and Roman scholars. | (iii)Lucian Febvre and Vidal de la Blache advocated and developed system-atically the school of possibilism. |
What did Radical school of thought employ?
Distinguish between determinism, possibilism and Neo-determinism.

Explain the three different school of thought in Human Geography.
Describe the dichotomy between physical phenomena and human beings.
The dichotomy between physical phenomena and human beings is not a valid one because nature and human beings are inseparable elements and should be seen holistically.
It is interesting to note that both physical and human phenomena are used as metaphore in using symbols from the human anatomy, for example the face of the earth, eye of the storm, mouth of the river etc. and even German geographer described state and country as living organisms and the out work of road, railway etc.
Hence, cannot separate the nature and human beings which are so intricately interviewed.

Geography
'There is mutual interaction between the elements of Physical Geography and Human Geography.' Support the statement with suitable examples.
Physical geography studies physical environment and human geography studies “the relationship between the physical/natural and the human worlds, the spatial distributions of human phenomena and how they come about, the social and economic differences between different parts of the world”.
Human beings interact with their physical environment with the help of technology. It is not important what human beings produce and create but it is extremely important ‘with the help of what tools and techniques do they produce and create’.
”Nature and human are intricately intertwined.” What human values are required to sustain this relationship? Explain.
The human values:
(i) The eco-development through afforestation.
(ii) Promotion of Sustainable Development.
(iii) Strict implementation of water management policy.
Explain the concept of ‘Determinism’ with suitable examples.
The concepts:
(i) This type of interaction between primitive human society and strong forces of nature was termed as environmental determinism.
(ii) At the stage of very low technological development the was presence of a naturalised human, who listened to Nature, was afraid of its fury and worshipped it.
(iii) There is direct dependence of human beings on nature for resources which sustain them. The physical environment for such societies becomes the “Mother Nature”.
Examples: Benda, who lives in the wilds of the Abujh Maad area of central India.
“The nature and human beings are so intricately intertwined that they can’t be separated.” Substantiate the statement.
Nature and human beings are intertwined
(i) The nature & humans are inseparable.
(ii) In the natural environment, man has created social and cultural environment through mutual interaction.
(iii) Physical and human phenomena are often described in metaphors like –face of the earth, eye of the storm, mouth of the river, snout of the glacier, profile of the soil etc.
‘‘The imprints of human activities are created everywhere.’’ Justify this statement by giving any three examples.
Examples of human imprints are:
(i) Health resorts on highlands,
(ii) Fields, orchards and pastures in plains and rolling hills.
(iii) Ports on the coasts.
“Nature provides opportunities and humans make use of these and slowly nature gets humanized and starts bearing imprints of human endeavour”. Analyse the statement with examples.
Examples of human imprints are:
(i) Health resorts on highlands.
(ii) Fields, orchards and pastures in plains and rolling hills.
(iii) Ports on the coasts.
“Nature and humans are inseparable elements”. Justify the statement with suitable examples.
The earth is the home of mankind. It may be in different forms. All types of life supports are provided by nature. They directly depend on nature. Nature and humans are inseparable and should be seen as a single element.
For eg:
-The concepts of friction and heat helped us discover fire.
-Understanding the secrets of DNA and genetics enabled us to conquer many diseases.
-The laws of aerodynamics helps us to develop faster planes.
‘‘Nature provides opportunities and humans make use of these and slowly nature gets humanised and starts bearing the imprints of human endeavour.’’ Justify the statement.
The imprints of human activities are created everywhere; health resorts on highlands, huge urban sprawls, fields, orchards and pastures in plains and rolling hills, ports on the coasts, oceanic routes on he oceanic surface and satellites in the space. The earlier scholars termed this as possibilism.Nature provides opportunities and human being make use of these and slowly nature gets humanised and starts bearing the imprints of human endeavour.
“The knowledge and understanding of laws of nature are extremely valuable to human kind”. Explain the values that can help to use the gifts of nature in sustainable manner.
If human beings understand the law of nature, they can help live and develop in a sustainable manner.
a) If we learn to live in harmony with nature without disturbing other organisms, we will be able to harness the resources in a sustainable way.
b) If we respect nature and its forces, we can minimise losses due to natural disasters.
c) Like other organisms, if we take only to fulfil our needs and control our greed, we will be able to maintain sustainability.
These values can help us use the gifts of nature in a sustainable manner.
