    Question 7
    CBSEENGE11011799

Present a concise account of aerial photograph in India.

    Solution
Aerial photographs were started in 1920 when large scale aerial photograph of Agra city was taken. Subsequently Air Survey party of Survey of India took up aerial survey at Irawadi Delta forests which was completed in 1923-24.
Today aerial photographs in India are carried out for the entire country under the over all super vision of the Directorate of Air Survey, New Delhi.

Three flying agencies are Indian Air Force, Air Survey Company, Kolkata and National Remote Sensing Agency, Hyderabad have been officially authorised to take aerial photographs.

    Question 8
    CBSEENGE11011800

What are the advantages of aerial photography ?

    Solution
The following are the advantages :

    1. Time freezing ability.

    2. Broadcasting sensitibility.

    3. Three dimensional perspective.

    4. Improved vantage point.

    Question 9
    CBSEENGE11011801

Give the types of aerial photographs.

    Solution
The types of photographs are :

    1. Vertical photographs

    Question 10
    CBSEENGE11011802

What are the two major uses of an aerial photograph ? Elaborate.

    Solution
The uses of aerial photographs are :

    1. Photogrammetry : It refers to the science and technology of making reliable measurements from aerial photographs.

    2. Image Interpretation : It is an art of identifying images of objects and judging their relative significance.

    Question 11
    CBSEENGE11011803

What are the different methods of scale determination ?

    Solution
There are three methods of determining the scale :

    1. By establishing relationship between photo distance and ground distance : In this method if additional information like ground distance of two identifiable points in an aerial photograph is available it is simple to work out the scale of a vertical photograph.

    2. By establishing relationship between photo distance and map distance : If a reliable map is available for the area shown on an aerial photograph it can be used to determine the photo scale.

    3. By establishing relationship between focal length and flying height of the Aircraft

We can determine the photo scale provided the information about the focal length of camera and the flying height of the aircraft are known.

    Question 12
    CBSEENGE11011804

What is the geometry of aerial photographs ?

    Solution
To understand the geometry of an aerial photograph it is important to appreciated the orientation of the photography with respect to the ground i.e. the way the rays connect or project on the ground in relation to the ground representation.
    Question 13
    CBSEENGE11011805

Distinguish between aerial photograph and map.

    Solution

    Aerial Photograph

    Map

    • It is a central projection.

    • It is an orthogonal projection.

    • The scale of the photograph is not uniform.

    • The scale of the map is uniform throughout the map extent.

    • Enlargement/reduction does not change the contents of the photographs and can easily be carried out.

    • Enlargement/reduction of the maps involves redrawing it afresh.

    • Aerial photography holds good for inaccessible and inhospitable areas.

    • The mapping of inaccessible and inhospitable areas is very difficult and sometimes it becomes impossible.

    Question 18
    CBSEENGE11011810

What is scale of aerial photographs ?

    Solution
The Scale of Aerial Photographs : The concept of scale for aerial photographs is much the same as that of a map. Scale is the ratio of a distance on an aerial photograph, the distances between the same two planes on the ground in the real world. It can be expressed in unit equivalents like 1 cm = 1,000 km (or 12,000 inches) or as a representative fraction (1 : 100000).
