On the basis of which two clinical symptoms does a doctor diagnose that a person is suffering from hypertension? Suggest four dietary changes one can make in the family meals to suit his specific need.
Recommend two precautions one can follow to make meals suitable for such a condition.

Solution

Two clinical symptoms of blood pressure are:

  1. Dizziness
  2. Breathlessness
  3. Headache
  4. Fatigue
  5. Nausea
  6. Irregular heartbeat

Dietary Tips:

  1. Reduce intake of all animal products like meats, fish, eggs, poultry and dairy. These foods are loaded with animal fat, this fat is absorbed faster than vegetable fats in our body.
  2. Reduce salt intake as excess salt intake holds on the water in the body thereby raising the blood pressure.
  3. Include whole wheat, grains in diet. Fiber contrived in 'whole' foods help to break down the cholesterol deposited in the arteries, making the blood more fluid & free flowing.
  4. Give plenty of liquid foods to avoid constipation.

Precautions to be taken for planning meal in hypertension:

  1. Given low salt food and no pickle.
  2. Hot beverages like coffee should be avoided.
  3. Avoid fried and processed foods.
  4. Avoid too much spicy food.
