(i) What is meant by a paramagnetic substance? State Curie’s law.

(ii) What is the value of magnetic susceptibility of Aluminium of its relative permeability is 1.000022?

Solution

(i)
Paramagnetic substance—These are those substances when placed in an external magnetic field, are feebly magnetised in the direction of magnetising field, e.g.—Al, Na, Pt etc.

Curie’s Law—The susceptibility of a paramagnetic substance varies inversely as the Kelvin temperature of the substance.
straight Z subscript straight m space proportional to space 1 over straight T
This is known as Curie’s Law.

(ii)
Given:
μr = 1.000022.

We know,
         μr = 1 + Xm

1.000022 = 1 + xm

So,   Xm = 0.000022

The loss of power in a transformer can be reduced by:
  • Increasing the number of turns in primary
  • Increasing ac voltage applied to primary.
  • Using a solid core made of steel.
  • Using a laminated core of soft iron.

Solution

D.

Using a laminated core of soft iron.

Question

Arrange the three types of magnetic materials, i.e., paramagnetic, diamagnetic and ferromagnetic materials, in decreasing order of their magnetic susceptibility.

Solution

The paramagnetic, diamagnetic and ferromagnetic materials can be arranged in decreasing order of magnetic susceptibility is as follows:
Ferromagnetic > Paramagnetic > Diamagnetic

Question

State how the magnetic susceptibility of a ferromagnetic material changes when it is heated.

Solution

When a magnetic material is heated its magnetic susceptibility decreases.
