    State how each of the following factors were the cause of the Second World War:

    The failure of the League of Nations.

    Solution

    1. Absence Of Great Powers : It was unfortunate that the covenant of the League of Nations was made a part parcel of the peace settlement. It would have been better if it had kept separate. There were many states which consider the Treaty Of Versailles as a treaty of revenge, and were not prepared to ratify the same. By not retifying the treaty , they refused to be the members of the League.

    2. Domination Of France and England : It was felt that the League Of Nations was dominated by England and France and consequently the other states began to loose their confidence in that organization.

    3. Rise Of Dictatorship : The rise of dictatorship in Italy, Japan and Germany also weakened the chances of success of the League of Nations . Japan was determined to acquire fresh territories and her unscrupulous patriotism threw to the winds of all principles of international law and morality. If the League was to prepared to condone her fault of conquering Manchuria . She was to prepared to give up her membership of the League and that is exactly what she actually did.

    The Aggressive Nationalism of Germany.

    Solution

    German nationalism was a new phenomenon, emerging from the unification of Germany in 1871. It became fascinated with German imperial expansion (securing Germany’s ‘place in the sun’) and resentful of the British and their empire.
    Hitler the ruler of Germany started the rearmament and compulsory military service in gross violation of the treaty of Versailles.
    He believed that all the people of the Aryan race must be united in the german empire.

    The Policy of Appeasement.

    Solution

    i. Appeasement in a political context is a diplomatic policy of making political or material concessions to an enemy power in order to avoid conflict. The term is most often applied to the foreign policy of the British Prime Ministers Ramsay Macdonald, Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain towards Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy between 1935 and 1939.

    ii. Great Britain, France and the United States had the power and resources to check the aggressive actions of Germany, Italy and Japan during the 1930s but they failed to do so on account of the policy of appeasement followed by them towards the Axis Powers.

    iii. Their policy of appeasement reflected their desire for peace, an attempt on their part to recover their bearings and to re-assert their self- respect and “exasperation with anyone who would try to probe that mass of emotional pretence and questionable reasoning.”
